Campsmount in Space… WE DID IT!!!

February 11, 2012 in Campsmount in Space, Community, Design & Technology, Extra Curricular Activities, Front Page News, Parents, Staff, STEM, STEM Campsmount in Space, Uncategorized by Mr S. P. Huntridge

I am extremely pleased to announce that the Campsmount Technology College S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering an Mathematics) Club has managed to send up a weather balloon with a GoPro Camera and GPS unit to 100,000ft, nearly 20 miles high, and then recover it again.

The flight lasted nearly 2 hours and was tracked throughout by one of our students, Joe Lindley in Year 9, in his “Mission Control”. For nearly 40 minutes we lost the GPS signal due to how high it was but it thankfully came back on and the balloon popped at 100,000ft and the system came down on a parachute. The unit landed in Caunton Near Newark and had travelled 50 miles down South from School. Two Sixth Form students Andrew Wigglesworth and Rebecca Smith jumped in the Mini with me and chased the balloon down the A1 only stopping for a quick refuel at McDonalds. Joe guided us with pinpoint accuracy to the exact spot where it had landed. After asking a rather surprised and slightly confused cattle farmer if we could go and get it from one of her fields we set off for a walk for a mile or so and found the system sitting happy with everything working fine still in the middle of a field.

The video is nearly 60mins long and was only cut short due to the vacuum inside the camera casing collapsing one of the buttons down. It is a simply outstanding view and you can see our school and all surrounding villages. At some points you can see the River Ouse snaking towards the Humber and just on the horizon the North Sea.

A simply amazing achievement and a massive WELL DONE to all the S.T.E.M. Club students, staff and Smartassess who have made this project possible.

The sky is no longer the limit!!

Using a DJI F450 NAZA Quadcopter with a GoPro sportscam Campsmount S.T.E.M Club has yet again managed to get some fantastic aerial footage. We will soon be setting free our weather balloon to 100,000ft and the footage from that should be outstanding. If you want to know more please feel free to pop along to S.T.E.M Club on a Tuesday evening in D2.

If you live in Campsall village can you spot your house in the video below?

On Thursday 19th January Campsmount S.T.E.M Club will be looking to the stars and with a powerful telescope to see what we can find. At the moment Jupiter and the Andromeda Galaxy are clearly visible on a clear night and make for simply stunning viewing. The pictures below have been taken through the telescope we will be using, click on them to make them bigger. Viewing it with the naked eye is an experience that will leave you speechless.

We will be running this from 6:30pm WEATHER PERMITTING till 7:15pm. If there is a thick covering of cloud or raining it will not be possible to view anything.

The telescope will be set up on the parish field and parents and students will be more than welcome to come along and have a look. If anyone has a telescope and wants to bring it along feel free to do so as guidance can be given on what to look at and how to set it up.

At S.T.E.M club we have managed to perform a tethered launch using the weather balloon that we are planning to send up to near space, 100,000ft. We sent it up to about 200ft with twin lines holding it so we could safely test all the systems. The balloon and all the systems worked perfect as did the whole team with each member having their own specific and very important job to do. The GPS pinpointed where the system was using Google Maps and the video camera took some great quality video and stunning pictures which you can see below.

You can keep up to date with the project at:

The project is open to all students and staff and we would love to see more pop along and join this exciting project.

Local Heroes of S.T.E.M

September 26, 2011 in Design & Technology, STEM by Mr S. P. Huntridge

Looking back at some of our local history of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics I was very excited to find out about a student in Year 8 Joely Sheriff has a Great Granddad with a very important link to both local and international Science, Technological, Engineering and Mathematics.

He was the driver of what was one of the most important trains ever constructed and best of all it was built in Doncaster, The Flying Scotsman. This train in 1923 could top 100mph which was a phenomenal speed. The train in it’s life has covered now 2,000,000 miles all over the globe and is still in perfect running order at York Railway Museum.

He was also the driver for another extremely important steam locomotive the Mallard another Doncaster train which still to this day holds the world speed record for a steam locomotive at 126mph. This fantastic and stunning looking train is also at York Railway Museum for all to see.

In the picture below he is the Gentleman facing the camera and as a added note the gentleman to his left hand side is the writer of Thomas the Tank engine, Reverend Wilbert Awdry. The train in the background is the Flying Scotsman.

Doncaster has a large history of S.T.E.M. links and it is great that a direct descendant of one of these heroes comes to Campsmount. I wonder how many of you will be the next S.T.E.M hero and what you may do or create to push the boundaries of S.T.E.M in the future?

Does your family have a Local Hero of S.T.E.M if so please let Mr Huntridge know the details.

The photos in the slide show are a mix of G.C.S.E Resistant Materials and Electronic Products plus some of the fantastic work from A-Level Product Design.

The team in the Design and Technology department are looking forward to next years students producing some more superb work to be proud of.

Design and Technology Revision 2011

May 11, 2011 in Community, Design & Technology, Parents, Staff, Students by Mr S. P. Huntridge

There are loads of books out there to help you revise and I am sure your teacher has suggested some good ones. You can search www.amazon.co.uk for second hand books as they start at only £1.00 for certain titles. Try searching for your subject and see what you can find.

Another option is to get the DT APP for the Iphone / Ipod / Ipad. This is an awesome App that has tests and various tools to help you develop a comprehensive knowledge that will clearly help you in your exam.

Take a look at www.dtapp.info The app starts at only 59p for subject specific or £1.79 for all subjects. It is a great way to revise!!

If you know how to use QR codes you can simply point your device at the screen and you can download straight away.

Hope that helps and GOOD LUCK,

Using the Visualiser. Sharing ideas.

April 29, 2011 in Design & Technology, Staff, T&L Blog by Mr S. P. Huntridge

Here is a quick 2 min video showing a practical use of the visualiser in a lesson.

The lesson is a Year 8 Design and Technology lesson and the students have just been looking at one of the components that are going to be used in their circuit and the health and safety issues around soldering. The class is given a brief demo on how to create a high quality soldered joint before they have a go on their own soldering in their first component, a transistor.

There is a good deal of glare on the board but this was only picked up by the camera on my iPhone but the pupils said they hardly noticed it.

All the students were able to do the task with a high degree of success with only a couple needing encouragement to get over nerves.

Mr McKie introduced the visualiser to me and I was instantly astounded at what an aid it would be to teaching and learning in DT, especially when doing demos on very small areas such as soldering.

As an added thought. The pupils filmed this and it is good that you can hear comments that you do not pick up on from students near them. Maybe this is something else to look into?!

Of course i would be more than happy to help / show other staff how to use this equipment.
