The Right Reverend Bishop Peter visits Campsmount.

March 14, 2013 in Community, Design & Technology, Front Page News, Parents, Staff, STEM, STEM Campsmount in Space, Students by Mr S. P. Huntridge

We had the pleasure of welcoming the Right Reverend Bishop Peter of Doncaster to Campsmount. Bishop Peter was very interested in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic Club, more specifically the high altitude weather balloon project.

The Bishop met with students and staff that have been involved in S.T.E.M at Campsmount both past and present. They explained to him what S.T.E.M means to them and how it has had a positive impact upon their time at Campsmount.

The visit has given us some great ideas on how we can move the project forward and how we can involve the wider community of Doncaster in it whilst doing good for others. The Bishop is keen to assist us in achieving this and has pledged his support to the project.

A special thanks must go to Mr. Matthew Lynds from Rejus for arranging the visit.

Also a big special WELL DONE to all the students who took part, simply superb conduct and it a pleasure to see students converse in such a mature and constructive manner.

Mr. S. P. Huntridge

Grow your own designs with the 3D Printer.

March 1, 2013 in Design & Technology, Front Page News, Parents, Staff, Students, Uncategorized by Mr S. P. Huntridge

Design and Technology is fortunate to have been donated a 3D Printer by Dr John Murray of Lincoln University.

We are looking for aspiring designers from any year group to design the next awesome product. You can design ANYTHING as long as it fits into a 100 x 100 x 100mm cube. This design can then be “grown” on the 3D printer and will form part of our New Technologies display showing what we can do in Design and Technology.

One of the best pieces of software to use is Google Sketchup which you can get from here:

http://www.sketchup.com/intl/en/product/gsu.html

We also have ProDesktop on the school network which can be used to make any 3D CAD object.

The 3D printer we have is a RepRap model and is great for rapid prototypes.

If you want to take part download the software or come and see Mr Huntridge and he will show you how to use ProDesktop in school to make your 3D designs come to life.

Examples and ready made designs can be found at http://www.thingiverse.com/ so take a look and see what awesome designs can be made using what we have in Design and Technology.

Lets see what you can make. There is no limit to imagination!

S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Club at Campsmount is this year aiming higher than ever. We are hoping to launch another weather balloon to over 100,000ft and get some fantastic video.

Other plans are to get a live video feed as it goes up into the Stratosphere and in the future launch an unmanned drone from 50,000ft to return to home.

If you want to be part of S.T.E.M at Campsmount we will be now running evening sessions in R4 and the workshops from 3:10-4:10pm on a Thursday.

We have some great support from Sheffield Hallam University, Rejus Facilities Management and the Bishop of Doncaster.

Red Bull Stratos – Campsmount went there first!

October 15, 2012 in Campsmount School Sports Co-ordinator, Design & Technology, Front Page News, Parents, Staff, Students by Mr S. P. Huntridge

Felix Baumgartner and the Red Bull Stratos team set a new record yesterday with the highest freefall and fastest speed for a freefall that a man has ever done.

He fell from 127,000ft which is nearly 32 miles high.

Campsmount has already managed to send a GoPro up to over 100,oooft, just over 20 miles, and the picture is below is one which STEM club managed to capture. You can see Doncaster and if you look really close on the bottom right you can see Robin Hood Airport.

STEM Club is aiming to get even higher this year with some more awesome projects so keep tuned to see what we get up to.

Lego Robotics Trip Y7 and 6th Form.

March 5, 2012 in Design & Technology, Extra Curricular Activities, Front Page News, Parents, STEM by Mr S. P. Huntridge

Ridgewood School invited Campsmount across to see their new Lego Innovations centre. This has been funded by Lego and two of their educational representatives came up to show off the equipment to students and staff.

The eleven Y7 students had to build an Olympic village to provide housing, the arena and transport to the event. All of this took very careful planning which had the students testing their skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. It was great to see our students working with students from Ridgewood and Hall Cross to provide some innovative solutions. All the students had a great morning.

In the afternoon nine 6th form students looked at some advanced programming using the same style of programming that is used at the CERN laboratory. They used this to program robots to do certain tasks using a variety of sensors. All of which they did to a very high standard showing off how good Campsmount Students are at S.T.E.M based subjects.

It was a great day and proved that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are all very challenging yet exciting at the same time.

Campsmount in Space… WE DID IT!!!

February 11, 2012 in Campsmount in Space, Community, Design & Technology, Extra Curricular Activities, Front Page News, Parents, Staff, STEM, STEM Campsmount in Space, Uncategorized by Mr S. P. Huntridge

I am extremely pleased to announce that the Campsmount Technology College S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering an Mathematics) Club has managed to send up a weather balloon with a GoPro Camera and GPS unit to 100,000ft, nearly 20 miles high, and then recover it again.

The flight lasted nearly 2 hours and was tracked throughout by one of our students, Joe Lindley in Year 9, in his “Mission Control”. For nearly 40 minutes we lost the GPS signal due to how high it was but it thankfully came back on and the balloon popped at 100,000ft and the system came down on a parachute. The unit landed in Caunton Near Newark and had travelled 50 miles down South from School. Two Sixth Form students Andrew Wigglesworth and Rebecca Smith jumped in the Mini with me and chased the balloon down the A1 only stopping for a quick refuel at McDonalds. Joe guided us with pinpoint accuracy to the exact spot where it had landed. After asking a rather surprised and slightly confused cattle farmer if we could go and get it from one of her fields we set off for a walk for a mile or so and found the system sitting happy with everything working fine still in the middle of a field.

The video is nearly 60mins long and was only cut short due to the vacuum inside the camera casing collapsing one of the buttons down. It is a simply outstanding view and you can see our school and all surrounding villages. At some points you can see the River Ouse snaking towards the Humber and just on the horizon the North Sea.

A simply amazing achievement and a massive WELL DONE to all the S.T.E.M. Club students, staff and Smartassess who have made this project possible.

The sky is no longer the limit!!

Mr S. P. Huntridge.

STARGAZING Live @ Campsmount Technology College.

January 18, 2012 in Campsmount in Space, Design & Technology, Front Page News, STEM, STEM Campsmount in Space, Students by Mr S. P. Huntridge

On Thursday 19th January Campsmount S.T.E.M Club will be looking to the stars and with a powerful telescope to see what we can find. At the moment Jupiter and the Andromeda Galaxy are clearly visible on a clear night and make for simply stunning viewing. The pictures below have been taken through the telescope we will be using, click on them to make them bigger. Viewing it with the naked eye is an experience that will leave you speechless.

We will be running this from 6:30pm WEATHER PERMITTING till 7:15pm. If there is a thick covering of cloud or raining it will not be possible to view anything.

The telescope will be set up on the parish field and parents and students will be more than welcome to come along and have a look. If anyone has a telescope and wants to bring it along feel free to do so as guidance can be given on what to look at and how to set it up.

Mr S. P. Huntridge.
