The Campsmount Cheerleading squad and our Year 8 Sportshall Athletics team had both qualified finishing top in Doncaster competitions to attend the South Yorkshire School Games of 2013 and represent their borough Doncaster.

Unfortunately the competition was very fierce in the Sportshall Athletics section and our boys struggled to overcome this competition, they worked really hard and put in some good performances across both track and field events. However, they finished in 8th position at the end of the day.

Over on the Cheerleading front, it was a slightly different story. The girls put on an amazing display and they really went out guns blazing trying to take the South Yorkshire victory. However, in the end they narrowly missed on winning by a few points and they finished runners up.

This was a lot of the girl’s last performance at this event, as the squad consisted of quite a few year 11 girls that will be leaving us unfortunately next year. So I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of Bekki Dyas and myself to thank these girls for their fantastic commitment and hard work to Cheerleading over the last few years, they have been a pleasure to work with and will be sadly missed.

Also a huge thank you to our School Games Young Organisers Jessica Sandford and Cory Deere, who were a fantastic asset assisting with different activities on the day, by leading and officiating to a great standard.

In March 2013, the Campsmount Cheerleading Club entered the third Doncaster Cheerleading Competition, which was held at Campsmount Academy and co-ordinated by myself. The students had to perform a routine without stunts, only using Pom Dance material.

The students performed a rendition of their High School Musical piece that they were entering in the Eurovision Dance Contest 2013, however changing certain aspects of the routine to fit within the criteria of a pom dance. They performed their piece to the music Get Up by Rattle feat Far Eastern Movement. The routine consisted of 15 students who had auditioned to take part in the competition and our own Cheerleading Coach Bekki Dyas had selected them. The girls really got into the spirit of cheerleading using props like signs and basketballs to spice up their routine.

All students put on a fantastic display and performed the routine to an excellent standard, which impressed the judges as they finished top of the leader board. They scored very highly on their overall impression and arm motions, which were extremely strong. The competition was judged by members of the Doncaster Knights Cheerleading squad, who also put in a special guest appearance.

The Campsmount squad will now represent Doncaster at the South Yorkshire School Games in a few weeks time…..Come on Campsmount lets show South Yorkshire what we are made of!

Doncaster Secondary Schools Sportshall Athletics

December 11, 2012 in Campsmount School Sports Co-ordinator, Festivals and Competitions by C Knowland

On Wednesday 5th December we took a group of year 7 and 8 students to the Doncaster Secondary School Sportshall  Athletics.  There was tough competition from schools such as Balby, Rossington, McAuley and Don Valley.  Campsmount fielded a strong team with some outstanding performances from the likes of Kate and Rebecca Wainer in year 8; these girls destroyed the opposition in all the track events they took part in.  Kirsty Pollard in year 7 was drafted in at the last minute to cover an absent athlete and produced some awesome track performances.  Brandon Hortorton and Charlie Ennis dominated the track events in the year 7 competition.  The whole of the year 8 boys’ team gave fantastic performances on both the track and field events finishing in runners-up position and securing a place in the School Games Finals which will be held at the EIS in March.  Well done all those who took part and represented Campsmount, and good luck to the year 8 boys’ team in the School Games Finals.

Under 16 National Schools Netball Tournament.

December 11, 2012 in Campsmount School Sports Co-ordinator, Festivals and Competitions by C Knowland

Saturday 24th November was the Under 16′s National Schools Netball Tournament, held at Wickersley School and Sports College in Rotherham.

Campsmount where the only Doncaster school represented in the Under 16 tournament and the girls faced some tough opposition from Sheffield High School, Silverdale, Wales and Wickersley on a very cold morning. The girls played some fantastic Netball and demonstrated great team work.

Sheffield High School won the tournament but it wasn’t an easy win for them, the standard of Netball was high and Campsmount worked hard to match this high standard.

I was very impressed at what I saw from Campsmount and very proud to have taken them to the tournament. Well done ladies!

Campsmount Year 8 are South Yorkshire Rugby League Champion Schools Winners 2012

October 17, 2012 in Campsmount School Sports Co-ordinator, Community, Festivals and Competitions, Front Page News, Parents, Staff by We are Campsmount

The Sheffield Eagles community team have been organising and running the recent Carnegie Champion Schools South Yorkshire Finals.

The Y8 final took place on Thursday 11th October at the newly built Shafton ALC in Barnsley and had 6 teams competing.

Tony Martin Head of PE at Shafton ALC said “We are really proud to host the Y8 Rugby League competition at our brand new school and we really value the support we get from the Sheffield Eagles.”

These six teams were the best teams from the Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster qualifying rounds.

The Campsmount team stormed to victory in their group against both Shafton and Rossington. In League 2 both Barnsley Academy and King Edwards were on a collision course to see who qualified for the final.

It came down to the last game where Barnsley Academy was required to win by 5 clear tries. An early try for Barnsley Academy kept the dream alive, the game then turned into a tough affair and finally ended up 8 – 4 to Barnsley Academy which meant King Edwards qualified for the final as they had scored more tries through the competition.

In the final both teams started well and the game was end to end. The game was waiting for a moment of inspiration which eventually came with a free flowing move from Campsmount which saw Conner Wheeler get on the outside of the King Edwards defence to break the deadlock.

Campsount then piled on the pressure and the pressure told when Owen Brock broke the King Edwards defence and went on a rampaging run to line, riding a strong challenge on the way, that sealed the game for Campsmount who are crowned the Y8 South Yorkshire Champion Schools Winners 2012.

All at the Sheffield Eagles want to congratulate Campsmount and King Edwards on progressing to the next stage of the Carnegie Champion Schools competition and special congratulations to the South Yorkshire Champions at Y8 Campsmount.

Campsmount Year 9s are South Yorkshire Rugby League Champions

October 9, 2012 in Festivals and Competitions, Front Page News, Parents, Staff, Students by We are Campsmount

The Sheffield Eagles community team have been organising and running the recent Carnegie Champion Schools South Yorkshire Finals. The Y9 final took place on Thursday 4th October at Brinsworth and had 9 teams competing. These nine teams were the best teams from the Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster qualifying rounds.
The nine teams would separate into two leagues and the two winners from each group would play in the final.
Forge Valley went through from league one with hard fought victories over Clifton, Barnsley Academy and Don Valley whilst in group two it went down to the last game for who qualified for the final.
Campsmount qualified comfortably from the other group without conceding a single try to set up a great final between themselves and Forge Valley.
The big final started with crunching tackles from both sets of forwards before a great barnstorming run by Forge Valley scoring the first try near the posts. Campsmount fought back with a great try in the corner setting up a tense finish. With both teams going close, Forge Valleys dynamo loose forward pulling the strings, strong defence from Campsmount stopped the Forge Valley onslaught so the game went into extra time. A couple of tactical changes paid dividends as Tyrone Clapham snuffed out the threat of their main player, with Alex Tate and Charlie Hepworth swapping positions.
With the game to flowing freely it was relentless end to end action. Campsmount finally found a chink in the Forge Valley armour to cross in the corner following a great solo try from Charlie Hepworth enabling Campsmount to claim the victory making them the Y9 South Yorkshire final Winners for 2012.

Campsmount Year 11 Rugby Team crowned champions of South Yorkshire

October 4, 2012 in Community, Festivals and Competitions, Front Page News, Parents, Staff, Students by We are Campsmount

The Sheffield Eagles community team have been organising and running the recent Carnegie Champion Schools South Yorkshire Finals. The first of these was the Year 11 final which took place on Thursday 20th September at Brinsworth Comprehensive schools and had 6 teams competing. These six teams were the best teams from the Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster qualifying rounds.

The six teams were drawn into 2 groups of 3 teams. The winners of each group would then advance onto the Yorkshire rounds of the competition. The results from each of these leagues are shown below.

From the league rounds Don Valley (Doncaster) and Campsmount (Doncaster) were crowned winners of their groups, however there was the small matter of the final to decide the seeding for the Yorkshire rounds.

After a nervy start by both sides Campsmount made a repeat set count on the Don Valley line which resulted in a well worked try to the left of the posts, with a successful conversion it made the score 6 – 0. Don Valley rallied well in the closing stages of the game and looked to sending the game into extra time only to be thwarted by some determined defence by Campsmount who soaked up the pressure before a breakaway try in the last minute of the game decided the outcome, once more another successful conversion made the game 12 – 0.

All at the Sheffield Eagles want to congratulate Campsmount and Don Valley on progressing to the next stage of the Carnegie Champion Schools competition and special congratulations to the South Yorkshire Champions at Y11 Campsmount.

U13 Tennis Championships 2012

July 10, 2012 in Campsmount School Sports Co-ordinator, Festivals and Competitions by C Knowland

On the 12th June a number of students represented Campsmount in the Doncaster tennis qualifiers at Danum. There were some excellent doubles performances but it was James Fleming and Daniel Diggle (Y8) who breezed through their group to qualify for the Doncaster finals at Wheatley Hills Tennis Club on 27th June.

At the finals our students faced some tough opposition in Hill House and Hayfield. We played Hill House first beating those 6-4 in an evenly matched contest. We went into our second game full of confidence and this contributed to a convincing 6-3 victory over Hayfield. Topping the group meant we would progress through to the South Yorkshire phase of the completion and would represent Doncaster at the inaugural School Games at Abbeydale Tennis Club in Sheffield on 2nd July. They were the first tennis players in Campsmount to achieve this in over 10 years.

At the South Yorkshire Championships, Daniel and James were drawn against fellow qualifiers from Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and our rivals Hill House (Doncaster). Despite a slow start in the cold, we managed a narrow victory against Winterhill (4-3). We then were drawn to place our local neighbours (Hill House) immediately after the first game. They were certainly out to get their revenge and performed very well. They narrowly beat us 4-3 and meant the “friendly” challenge now stood at 1-1! We dusted ourselves down (Daniel literally after a stumble in the Hill House game) to demolish Holgate 7-0. We then had the fortune of moving inside to play on the carpet court. This took some adjusting to and this showed with a disappointing 6-1 defeat to the hands of the local school – Tapton. Once again the lads showed their mental toughness by going out and finishing the tournament on a high with a comprehensive 7-0 victory over Thrybergh.

The boys finished with a bronze medal (3rd best doubles paring in South Yorkshire) which meant they missed out on progressing to the Yorkshire round of the competition by one place. Whilst they were disappointed not to progress, they should be very proud of their efforts and have 2 more years to improve further and achieve gold.

Year 5 & 6 Tag Rugby Festival and Coaching

June 12, 2012 in Festivals and Competitions by C Knowland

Earlier in the academic year both Askern Spa and Norton Junior schools received a block of coaching from Doncaster Rugby League (The Dons).  Community coach Martin Rowlands delivered some expert tag rugby coaching in both schools leading up to the year 5 and 6 tag rugby festival.  All year 5 and 6 pupils were involved in the coaching within their PE lessons.

A select team of 10 pupils including girls and boys were then chosen to represent each school at the festival.  Our Campsmount  junior schools joined with other schools from the Outwood pyramid for the festival that was held at Wheatley Hills rugby union ground.

The competition was split into two groups with each school playing three matches each.  The winners and runners up of each group then went on to play each other in the semi finals with the winners progressing to the final.

We had two very efficient and conscientious leadership academy students present in the form of Kieran Cave and Kieran Lewis who umpired as well as fulfilling other general leadership roles.

The winners of the festival were Woodlands Juniors with Waverley Juniors being the runners up.  Norton Juniors were the winners of the Campsmount pyramid securing their spot in the finals.  Following the success of the coaching and festival we are hoping to repeat the same format next year.

A note from our Primary Link Teacher at Askern Spa Junior School:

“All the children had a very enjoyable afternoon with some fantastic rugby being played. Well done to all the children who took part.”

Campsmount and Don Valley Pyramid KS1 Kwik Cricket Festival

May 29, 2012 in Festivals and Competitions by C Knowland

The KS1 kwik cricket festival was held on the 22nd May and was a fantastic success with seven schools in attendance.  The weather showed up and it was a glorious day! The facilities and coaches provided by Askern Welfare Cricket Club were excellent as always.  Eddie Longley and Manuel Bisby from Askern Welfare C.C were on form providing their umpiring skills all day.  The club chairman Norman Firth was also present to open the festival and present the winners and runners-up with their medals.

Norton Infants won the festival, but it was a very close contest as they were on the same points as Bentley High Street Infants which meant that it came down to total runs scored by each team. In third place were Askern Littlemoor, 4th Askern Moss Road, 5th Sunny Fields, 6th Castle Hills and 7th were Toll Bar.  There were some great skills showcased by the children involved and there were lots of smiles all round.

A huge thank you must go to all the staff and coaches involved prior to and on the day of the competition. I know within the Campsmount pyramid (Norton Infants, Askern Littlemoor Children’s Centre and Askern Moss Road)  Eddie Longley had dedicated time to coach at all three schools prior to the festival and it was clear they were on the ball, with all three schools finishing within the top four. The CTC leadership academy students were fantastic in their roles as umpires, scorers and general runners helping the day go smoothly.  A big thank you must also go to the Doncaster neighbourhood team who provided us with a large gazebo keeping lots of children out of the sun between matches.

We are very lucky to have such amazing people in the Campsmount Community who give up their time to help sport grow in our area, the coaches and staff at Askern Welfare Cricket Club is a prime example of this.
