Netball Youth Umpire Qualification 2012

February 10, 2012 in Campsmount School Sports Co-ordinator, Leadership & Volunteering by C Knowland

On Thursday 9th February, 4 of our Leadership Academy students performed their Netball Youth Umpire tests at Campsmount Technology College. The girls all had to demonstrate that they could umpire and fully control a game of netball whilst being observed by a tester from England Netball.

I would like to thank Balby Carr Sports College for bringing over 2 teams to play Campsmount so our Leadership students could complete their tests. The standard of umpiring was very good from all Year 11 girls and it is pleasing to announce that all 4 girls passed this qualification.

The students are: Billie Canning-Birtles, Olivia Jackson, Abigayle Roberts and Jessica Sandford.

Unfortunately Sarah-Jane Webb was poorly on the day of assessments and was unable to complete her test at this point.

I would also like to thank Kim Burns for all of her help to ensure the girls achieved this award. It is great to see the student’s hard work and dedication to succeed has paid off…………….Well done girls!

Young Leaders Cricket Course 2012

February 10, 2012 in Campsmount School Sports Co-ordinator, Leadership & Volunteering by C Knowland

In January 2012, we secured funding to pay for our Campsmount Leadership Academy students to complete their Cricket Young Leaders Award. 13 of our students were able to attend the training one evening after school at Campsmount.

Andy Lockwood from the Active Fusion Sports Partnership along with James Ward were the tutors of this course and they gave our students an insight into how to assist with the delivery of cricket across primary and secondary school age ranges.

The course was a great success and all students received this award and have gained another qualification to add to their CV through being a member of our academy.

I would like to thank Andy and James for coming over to Campsmount and delivering the course.

Emergency First Aid Training

December 2, 2011 in Leadership & Volunteering by C Knowland

Over the course of the last 2 months Campsmount have put through a total of 23 students to complete their Emergency First Aid qualification. This has taken place over the course of 2 evenings and has been run by a newly formed First Aid training company called TPM First Aid Training Solutions. Tim Monger who ran the courses has found working with our students to be an extremely enjoyable experience and has expressed how all of the students have worked very hard to develop their knowledge of First Aid.

I would also like to thank Tim for his hard work over the last few months as the courses that he has ran have been fantastic and our students have benefited from them immensely. This is all part of our new Leadership & Volunteering scheme, where we are looking at developing the provision of training opportunities that we provide for our hardworking PE students.

The students that completed the course were a mixture of students who are completing their Btec Diploma in Sport and those who are members of the Campsmount Leadership Academy. The students will now hopefully feel confident when assisting with extra-curricular sessions in the future, that they have completed this award and if an emergency arises they will know how to deal with this to assist the situation.

Pictured are some of the students completing this qualification.

Netball Youth Umpire Award & Year 7 Doncaster Festival 2011

December 1, 2011 in Leadership & Volunteering by C Knowland

In September 2010, a large number of students opted to complete the Netball Youth Umpire course during PE Curriculum time. Part of the option was ensuring that students knowledge of the game of Netball was there as a grounding in preparation to complete the course. Then the second part of the option was the completion of the course.

This took place over the next 3 months and consisted of students developing their knowledge of the rules of the game and how to be an effective umpire. Following this then over the next  8 months the students have continued to gain experience of umpiring games at various Netball fixtures and festivals that we hosted as part of belonging to the Flying High School Sports Partnership. The students found this very useful and also an enjoyable experience.

Then in October 2011, 12 umpires were put forward who had shown a willingness to work towards achieving this award to gain extra vital experience by organising and umpiring  a Year 7 festival to take place at Hayfield School just before October half term. The students worked with testers from England Neball to develop their knowledge further in preparation for being tested for this award.

The Year 7 students who played in the festival were from a range of schools across the Doncaster borough and they were released from school for the afternoon to play a fun round robin tournament. All of the 12 umpires worked as a trio to take it in turns to umpire different games on their court. This was a fantastic experience and one which the Year 7 students all benefited from and enjoyed too.

After completing this a handful of those students who have shown a high level of ability are now working towards completing their qualification and the remaining students have been given an opportunity to work hard and re-visit this being tested for this later in the academic year if they choose to. I was extremely proud of how the students have handled themselves during the process of completing this course.

Level 1 Dance Leaders Course 2011

December 1, 2011 in Front Page News, Leadership & Volunteering by C Knowland

In January this year, 26 students opted for completing the Level 1 Dance Leaders Course during core PE time in Year 10. All students regularly attended their lessons and worked really hard to develop their leadership skills and delivery of dance.

Upon completing this course they then attended their assessment dates in September at Askern Spa and Norton Juniors. They worked in pairs to deliver an hour’s session to a range of students from Years 5 & 6. Both students and staff really enjoyed the dance sessions from our students and one staff member commented on how great 2 leaders were and that they would love them to permanently deliver dance sessions at their school.

At the end of all the assessment dates it was brilliant to see that 25 students passed the award and only one student was deferred for another year, to gain more practical experience. This is the largest amount of students from Campsmount that have passed this award in one cohort.

It is also great to see now that some of the students are utilising this award by assisting either at Campsmount or any of our feeder schools within our pyramid, to deliver after school dance sessions. They have become members of the Campsmount Leadership Academy and are a credit to the school. Well done girls and keep up this great volunteering work!

Mini Leaders Programme 2010/11

December 1, 2011 in Leadership & Volunteering by C Knowland

During 2010, the Campsmount Pyramid became a pilot study for a new initiative which is going to be launched into Doncaster later in this year. The new initiative was an idea given to myself on a training course I attended in 2009. Following this, the Campsmount Primary Link Teachers were approached and asked if they would like to be used to pilot the study in their pyramid and look at rolling the initiative out across their schools during the beginning of 2010.

The initial idea had come from the Derby School Sports Partnership, where certain budding sports students in Key Stage 1 get selected to train up as mini sports leaders to develop small games in the playground at lunchtimes.

Norton Infants School kindly volunteered to be the hosts for the first pilot training session and the Primary Link Teachers from Askern Moss Road and Askern Childrens Centre, the 2 other Infant Schools in the pyramid also attended the training. 20 students, consisting of 10 boys and 10 girls from Year 2 attended the training and working alongside Sports Leaders from the Campsmount Leadership Academy completed their training.

The students looked at how to set equipment out and organise small games safely and effectively, how to give clear instructions on how to play and showing examples of this and finally how to help children if they found a game difficult. The students took it in turn to lead each other in small groups and then helped each other progress and build up their confidence, by giving constructive criticism.

All the staff who attended the training commented on it being a very useful programme that they will look at building into their PE programme this year, to develop leadership and volunteering in their schools.  This will then be a fantastic opportunity to build a framework prior to the playground leader’s scheme, which has proved a huge success, which we already run at both of our junior schools.

So watch out we will soon have keen budding mini sports leaders leading the way in sport at our Infant Schools across Doncaster!

Leadership Academy New Developments 2010

February 18, 2011 in Leadership & Volunteering by C Knowland

In September 2010, the application process commenced for new students to apply to become members of the Campsmount Leadership Academy. New Co-ordinators were appointed and both of these students assisted with the interview process. By the end of September, we had 30 students enrolled into the Academy, consisting of some previous members who had stayed on to study at school and new members in Year 10, 11, 12 & 13.

As part of being a member of the Campsmount Academy, those students who are 16 years old have also had the opportunity to apply to be members of the Doncaster Leadership Academy, I am pleased to announce that 4 of our students Georgina Burtoft, Tom Gabbitass, Josh Gilies and Lauren Wright have all been successfully appointed as members and over the course of the next year they will be completing training in a whole host of different awards and training courses.

On top of this the school were successful in receiving a grant from the Youth Bank Trust on rewarding our students for their hard work and dedication to the scheme and over the course of the next year, we will be paying for all of our members to attend various coaching qualification courses. As well, as looking into setting up “In House” Child Protection and First Aid Training, as part of the scheme.

The next stage for us is to order all new kit for academy members and look at upskilling our students with using the Realsmart package to record and monitor the Leadership and Volunteering that they do out in the community.

An exciting time for this project……..

2012 Olympic Legacy

February 18, 2011 in Leadership & Volunteering by C Knowland

In July 2010, Askern Spa Junior School were invited to attend the Doncaster School Sport Partnerships 2012 Olympic Legacy Celebration Day. The aim of the day is to give schools a whole range of different sporting experiences and give them a taste of what they could offer at their Primary Schools.

The Campsmount Pyramid decided to send the school who had won the most Festival Competitions this year to the event and that turned out to be Askern Spa Juniors. The students from Askern Spa got to experience a range of activities from Taekwondo, Dance, Tag Rugby to Ultimate Frisbee. The students had a fantastic day experiencing new sporting opportunities and it was great to see so much enjoyment from the students faces!

The Campsmount Leadership Academy also assisted in running the event and our Dance Leaders used the day as their formal assessment for their Level 1 in Dance Leaders. All students worked very hard and I am pleased to announce that they all passed the award.

Playground Leaders at Askern Spa

February 18, 2011 in Leadership & Volunteering by C Knowland

Askern Spa Junior school have taken their Playground Leaders scheme further by looking at celebrating the success of their leaders and promoting this in a positive way in their school.

In October 2009, 20 students attended training at their school to deliver different games and physical activities at lunchtime. Following this training the students were then placed into “trio teams” to deliver games during lunch times.

The plan of action for each lunch time is that one student sets up the equipment, one student completes the register and one student gives instructions on what the activity is and how to play the activity safely and correctly.

Each month the PLT Derryn Whitely and Askern Spa’s Sporting Volunteer Arthur McAdam pick a playground leader of the month and they get a certificate and their picture on the sports board, which was set up back in 2009.

Every week then the PLT takes home the registers which contain information about which
students have participated each day. This data is then analysed and each term the students in each class who have participated the most win a prize and a certificate.

The playground leaders also star any children who have been exceptional for example they have played fairly or helped then set up equipment. These students then go into a star players prize draw a bit like a raffle.

All of these rewards have been hugely success in raising aspirations and achievements within the school and improving behaviour on the playground at lunch time.

This scheme is working really well and we are getting a lot of students participating every day. Well done Askern Spa!

Playground Leaders Scheme at Norton Juniors

February 18, 2011 in Leadership & Volunteering by C Knowland

Norton Junior School first started the Playground Leaders Programme in 2008, working alongside sports leaders from year 9 at Campsmount Technology College.  They then continued to run the programme alone last year and they looked at setting the programme up on site to develop participation at lunch times within their school and also the Infants School next door.

This programme has now developed where various sports leaders are trained up at the start of the year to deliver small games to younger students and they also go over to the Infants School on different lunch times and deliver games to the students at key stage one.

Norton have tried to look at different unique activities to keep the students entertained and interested, therefore offering a varied mix of activities, which helps promote healthy fitness and lifestyles within their school. This also runs paramount to the fact that Norton Juniors achieved their healthy schools gold award last year.

Students take part in circus activities for example using spinning tops and mini stilt walking to participating in the normal games activities. The school have also just purchased a new boom box and IPOD to use outside to choreograph routines to in dance and cheerleading, using money donated from the Extended Schools Services.

As the School Sports Co-ordinator for this pyramid it has been fantastic to stand back and look at the progression this school has made in making this scheme such a huge success and to see the students delivering the activities in their clearly marked uniform is aspiring. A great step in the right direction for leadership and volunteering Norton – Well Done!!
