Eurovision Dance Contest 2011

December 1, 2011 in OSHL Clubs by C Knowland

It’s that time of year again, where the Campsmount Eurovision Dance Contest is now a widely recognised event across Doncaster!

In September 2010, I met with students who were members of the Campsmount Dance Academy and they were then asked to get into friendship groups in each year group and were handed their “Eurovision Brief”. This year Bekki Dyas the schools choreographer and I decided that the theme would be “Divas” and so then the students set to work on their routines.

Students worked with Bekki Dyas, Campsmounts Street Dance Coach, Mrs Knowland and Miss Lindley at the academy to develop these pieces. Askern Spa Junior School and Norton Junior School also participated in the contest, working with staff at their school and alongside Campsmount students, who are currently undertaking the Level 1 Dance Leaders Course. Also featuring in the contest this year were performances from the Campsmount Cheerleading Club and all the students put on an amazing display

On the night of the show the doors opened and guests were greeted with a large projector screen showing all the students rehearsing their routines. This was a great way of getting the audience into the Eurovision theme. Alongside this the students all sat around tables with their flags in the middle showing which country they belonged to. Spectators were all handed hand wavers when they arrived for the country that they had come to support and whilst waiting all 85 performers did a fantastic job of getting the crowd going with their hand wavers and cheering for their countries.

Again we pretended that the United Kingdom had won the contest in 2010 and this was the reason for us hosting the contest. Therefore, first of all a performance was given by what was meant to be the winning dance by United Kingdom in 2010. This was performed by all of the students from Campsmount. After this performance 12 countries in total that had entered the contest performed, which were Denmark, Romania, FYR Macedonia, Cyprus, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Sweden, Turkey, Iceland & Greece and with new appearances from Ireland and Norway returning back to the competition.

At the end of all the performances a short break was given for the judges to reflect on all the performances and for them to decide on the scores they were going to give out. Then each judge from the 12 countries gave points from 1-8, 10 and 12, reflecting the scoring system of the Eurovision Song Contest. Mr Huntridge and Mrs Knowland presented the show and even sampled some excellent french when announcing the points during the results. We had a large scoring system on the projector screen reflecting how the results are given in the contest. Also each judge had to say” Good Evening Europe” in their own language, then say for example “Here are the results of the Danish Jury” then after giving their scores they had to say thank you and goodbye in their own language.

After a very close contest between new comers Ireland and Cyprus, Ireland just sneaked in to win the 2011 Eurovision Dance Contest, with their Cheerleading performance to Tina Turner’s Proud Mary. The winning performers were invited to the stage to receive their trophy and medals and all students received a school trip to City Limits Dance Studio in Sheffield, to experience a taster day of Street Dance and Latin/Ballroom. Following this the winning country performed their winning dance.

This was a fantastic evening and all of the students who participated in the contest were a credit to our school. What a great end to the year showcasing all of our student’s hardwork and dedication to extra-curricular dance and cheerleading. Also special thanks again goes to Upstage School of Theatre dance for putting on a fabulous display to Blondie during the interval.

A great successful third Eurovision Party!!!

Grease Production 2011

December 1, 2011 in OSHL Clubs by C Knowland

In January 2011, Campsmount saw the first Musical Production in quite a few years. This event was organised by our Head of Music Sarah Kerrigan, who developed the talents of quite a few of our students to put on a great show.

The CTC Dance and Cheerleading academies supported this production by getting involved and putting on a great display as usual. Bekki Dyas was responsible for the main choreography in this, using snippets of the moves that were used in the original film. She also worked alongside the main cast to ensure they could put in some great dance moves throughout the show.

The Dancers and Cheerleaders performed classic dances to the famous “You’re the one that I want”, “Grease Lightning”, We Go Together” and many more, with the Street Dance Club putting in their own contemporary twist and missing in some modern Swedish House Mafia and Faithless snippets.

The students thoroughly enjoyed their first production and are looking forward to putting together pieces for the Oliver Production next year.

CTC Cheerleading Club

December 1, 2011 in OSHL Clubs by C Knowland

Over the last year we have been working hard to develop our CTC Cheerleading Squad. This has been down to the great work of our Students, Staff and our Street Dance/Cheerleading Coach BekkiDyas. Bekki is employed by Campsmount to develop the provision of Dance and Cheerleading at our school and over the past few years, she has been a tremendous asset to us.

The girls not only train hard and perform in our annual productions, but they also regularly perform at various community events around Norton and Askern and at various events at Castle Park Rugby Club.

After the devastation of the fire at our school, the girls all still attended the Cheerleading sessions set up at Askern Welfare Club on a Monday evening, ensuring that they didn’t miss out on practicing for their Dance showcase Performance. The girls are currently working hard on their performances for the school’s first musical production after quite a few years, so watch out for the Grease Cheerleaders coming soon after Christmas.

Eurovision Dance Contest 2010

December 1, 2011 in OSHL Clubs by C Knowland

It’s that time of year again, where I have been responsible for organising the Annual Dance Show, after the success of last year’s Eurovision Dance Contest, we decided to run it in the same style again, only this year securing a slot on Look North aswell! Back in September 2009, I met with students who were members of the Campsmount Dance Academy. They were then asked to get into friendship groups in each year group and were handed their “Eurovision Brief”.

Students had to choose a song and set to work choreographing their routines. Unfortunately when the fire struck in December, some students struggled to attend practices down at Askern Welfare, so we lost some of the performers. However, the majority still attended practices and they continued to work hard and put together some fantastic routines.

Students worked with Bekk iDyas, Campsmounts Street Dance Coach, Mrs Knowland and Miss Lindley at the academy to develop these pieces. Askern Spa Junior School and Norton Junior School also participated in the contest, working with staff at their school and alongside Campsmount students, who are currently undertaking the Level 1 Dance Leaders Course. Also new in the contest this year were performances from the newly formed Campsmount Cheerleading Club, the students put on an amazing display in their new Cheerleading kits supplied by Living Cheer.

On the night of the show the doors opened and guests were greeted with a large projector screen showing all the students rehearsing their routines. This was a great way of getting the audience into the Eurovision theme. Alongside this the students all sat around tables with their flags in the middle showing which country they belonged to. Spectators were all handed hand wavers when they arrived for the country that they had come to support and whilst waiting all 62 performers did a fantastic job of getting the crowd going with their hand wavers and cheering for their countries.

Due to the stage being destroyed in the fire, we hired professional staging, lighting and sound system, which was organised by Mrs Knowland and Mr Huntridge and some of the students attended a Youth Bank Trust Meeting to gain funding to help pay for this.

Again we pretended that the United Kingdom had won the contest in 2009 and this was the reason for us hosting the contest. Therefore, first of all a performance was given by what was meant to be the winning dance by United Kingdom in 2009. This was performed by performers from Upstage School of Theatre Dance, including Bekki Dyas. After this performance 10 countries in total that had entered the contest performed, which were Denmark, Romania, FYR Macedonia, Cyprus, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Sweden, Turkey, Iceland & Greece.

At the end of all the performances a short break was given for the judges to reflect on all the performances and for them to decide on the scores they were going to give out. Then each judge from the 10 countries were allowed this year to give only 1 point to their own country, then they gave points from 2 -8, 10 and 12, reflecting the scoring system of the Eurovision Song Contest. Mr Huntridge was also a fantastic asset on the night, presenting the show and even sampling some French when announcing the points during the results. We had a large scoring system on the projector screen reflecting how the results are given in the contest. Also each judge had to say” Good Evening Europe” in their own language, then say for example “Here are the results of the Danish Jury” then after giving their scores they had to say thank you and goodbye in their own language.

After a very close contest between Denmark and United Kingdom, Denmark just sneaked in to win the 2010 Eurovision Dance Contest. The winning performers were invited to the stage to receive their trophy and medals and all students received a school trip to City Limits Dance Studio in Sheffield, to experience a taster day of Street Dance, Cheerleading and Latin/Ballroom. Following this the winning country performed their winning dance to Alexandra Burke Broken Heels.

This was a fantastic evening and all of the students who participated in the contest were a credit to our school. This is a great way of developing lots of Cross Curricular links in schools and is something we would recommend to other schools. Not only does it develops Intra-competition within school and participation in out of school hours clubs.

A great successful second Eurovision Party!!!

Girls Get Moving Project

December 1, 2011 in OSHL Clubs by C Knowland

This is a new project which we have piloted at Campsmount Technology College this year, which combines offering our students Dance and Cheerleading delivered through our KS4 PE Curriculum and then an opportunity to stay behind after school and complete a Health and Beauty Course.

The aim of the project is to educate students how to lead a healthy lifestyle and show an understanding of how to care for the way they look. The Dance and Cheerleading section is based on educating our young people how to stay fit and healthy by exercising regularly and how this can be done in a fun way to modern music. The Health and Beauty section is based on raising our young people’s self-esteem and educating them how to apply Make Up correctly and look at designing fun Nail Art.

The students who have attended the course have said that this has been a valuable experience and that they have thoroughly enjoyed what has been offered to them. We would like to thank our regular Street Dancing Coach Bekki Dyas for the delivery of the Dance and Cheerleading and Emmalene Beck who is a qualified Beauty Therapist for training our girls in applying a whole new range of Beauty Treatments.

Norton Extra Curricular Clubs

February 18, 2011 in OSHL Clubs by C Knowland

Since January 2010, Norton Junior School has launched a new out of school hours learning club during extra-curricular time for students in years 3 & 4. Each half term the children have had the opportunity to learn the skills and tactics of a different team game. As this club has been running simultaneously with Askern Spa, at the end of each half term this has resulted in a competition between the 2 schools. Following the 6 week training sessions, 2 teams were selected from each school to compete.

In spring 1, 5 a side Football was the focus, with Norton Junior School winning the competition in a very exciting and tense match. This was followed with the second of our clubs focusing on High 5 Netball.  In the Summer term, Kwik Cricket was delivered and the final club was Rounders.

This has been an excellent way to introduce children in lower school to a wide range of team games and skills, as well as letting them compete competitively for their school.  Feedback from the children involved has been very positive. The matches were great to watch and gave the children the opportunity to not only play competitively, but to learn new skills and work as part of a team.

Campsmount Street Dance Club Update

February 18, 2011 in OSHL Clubs by C Knowland

At the end of May 2009 our Street Dance Club were successful in securing a Youth Bank Trust bid to gain funding to purchase some street dance kit for the dancers in their club. They also secured money to assist pay for an Urban Street Dance coach to come in and deliver sessions as an out of school hour’s club. This will be utilised next year to try and get more students dancing at Campsmount Technology College. The street dancers performed at the Doncaster Celebration Evening to showcase the dance they are doing and they looked very smart in their new kit.
