Askern Welfare Cricket School/Club Link 2010

December 1, 2011 in School Club Links by C Knowland

Over the course of the last few months we have been busy formalising a school/club link with Askern Welfare Cricket Club.

This started in April this year, whereby we supported the development of cricket delivery across all 5 of our feeder schools. Members of our Leadership Academy applied to the Youth Bank Trust Fund to secure a grant to pay for coaches from the club to go and deliver cricket to all of our students at our feeder schools. The grant was successful and with the help of our Leadership Academy each school received a 6 week block of cricket delivery.

Following this we worked alongside the Don Valley Pyramid and Bentley Cricket Club to offer a Key Stage 1 & 2 Festival for our entire cluster of schools. Both of these days were a great success and the young people that participated had a thoroughly enjoyable time and they developed their cricket skills to a much higher standard.

We have planned to do the same again this academic year, after the success of last year, working closely with the club. We are also in the process of assisting the club to gain Clubmark recognition and help the club gain more certified coaching courses.

Sheffield Stormers School/Club Link

February 18, 2011 in School Club Links by C Knowland

Since the Year 8 netballers were introduced to Netball in January last Year as Year 7’s they have took a very keen interest to playing this sport. Regularly 24 students attend training every week to learn and develop their talents further. At the end of the summer new kit was ordered for the squad which is very modern showing off the new netball look, which is lycra tops, skirts, bodywarmers and velcro bibs.

Since then I have set up a link with the nearest Junior Netball Club in Sheffield, which is Sheffield Stormers. The idea of this link is so the girls can continue playing Netball outside of school in the community and develop their talents much further and progress through playing and representing a club within Junior Leagues. This will also hopefully continue their participation in Netball once leaving school and promote lifelong participation.

The Year 8’s are piloting a car share scheme where friendship groups students get together so parents share the driving once a month to take the girls to the English Institute of Sport for training every week. If this scheme is successful it will be introduced to future years within the school.

Head coach Kate Vivian has been a tremendous help in setting up this link, delivering free coaching sessions to the girls at the school and meeting with myself to draw up a formalised School-Club agreement. She is also going to not only help develop the girls as performers, but look at training the students to achieve various leadership and officiating qualifications.

We are also going to work together to deliver festivals at the school and develop inter school competitions within this sport. Following on from this both Primary Link Teachers in the Junior Schools which belong to “The Campsmounts Family” are ready to take advantage of this fantastic School–Club link and the next process for us is to develop this link in Norton and Askern Spa Junior Schools.

This is a fantastic link for the school especially as Sheffield Stormers have now become one of the most successful clubs not only in Yorkshire, but also nationwide, with 6 teams playing in the Sheffield league and 1 team in the premier league. This is a new exciting link and I look forward to seeing many of our Campsmount girls representing Sheffield Stormers in the future!!!!!!
