Year 5&6Tag Rugby Festival and Coaching

June 12, 2012 in Uncategorized by C Knowland

Earlier in the academic year both Askern Spa and Norton Junior schools received a block of coaching from Doncaster Rugby League (TheDons).  Community coach Martin Rowlands delivered some expert tag rugby coaching in both schools leading up to the yr 5 and 6 tag rugby festival.  All year 5 and 6 pupils were involved in the coaching within their PE lessons.

A select team of 10 pupils including girls and boys were then chosen to represent each school at the festival.  Our Campsmount  junior schools joined with other schools from the Outwood pyramid for the festival that was held at Wheatley Hills rugby union ground.

The competition was split into two groups with each school playing three matches each.  The winners and runners up of each group then went on to play each other in the semi finals with the winners progressing to the final.

We had two very efficient and conscientious leadership academy students present in the form of Kieran Cave and Kieran Lewis who umpired as well as fulfilling other general leadership roles.

The winners of the festival were Woodlands Juniors with Waverley Juniors being the runners up.  Norton Juniors were the winners of the Campsmount pyramid securing their spot in the finals.  Following the success of the coaching and festival we are hoping to repeat the same format next year.

A note from our Primary Link Teacher at Askern Spa Junior School:

“All the children had a very enjoyable afternoon with some fantastic rugby being played. Well done to all the children who took part.”
